| What's Wrong With The Food Guide Pyramid? The USDA’s food guide pyramid is basically a joke. It is truly pathetic children are taught this in schools. The food guide pyramid does not offer sound nutritional recommendations. The USDA is basically influenced by large industries (dairy, beef, and wheat) when they make their recommendations. The pyramid caters to the profits of money hungry companies, not your health. The issues surrounding the food guide pyramid are chronicled in depth in the book Food Politics by Marion Nestle. This is a wonderful book that will truly enlighten. The main problem with the food guide pyramid is that it doesn’t produce good health. We are raised to believe we are supposed to eat in this way, but we should be questioning, says who? Are we really to believe the USDA is the authority of nutritious food? How silly. In 2005, the USDA came out with a revised and updated pyramid called My Pyramid. This pyramid is still a far cry from good nutrition. Basically, it says just make sure you eat this and also eat this and then get some of this too. Eat, eat, and eat. Milk, meat, grains, and lots of it. There’s no denying Americans eat way too much food. My pyramid is meant to be personalized, but I still find it lacking and nonspecific. It also obviously ignores the issues with eating milk, meat, and large amounts of grains. Here’s a good article about the food guide pyramid and another food pyramid called the Honest Food Guide Pyramid developed by Mike Adams of Natural News: http://www.naturalnews. com/019396.html. |
