| Freebirthing Freebirthing is gaining some popularity in the United States. It is also called unassisted birthing. This is a birth where there is no skilled attendant present, usually taking place at home. At present, there is not enough research to give much insight to the safety of free birthing. Freebirthers, however, generally do not make this decision lightly. They are usually very up to date on current information and well informed on possible complications or emergency situations and how to handle them. They take all the responsibility for their prenatal care. They are involved in their pregnancies in a way all women should be. I will admit the thought of free birthing is somewhat intriguing to me, stemming from a belief that birth is a normal natural event. I do not like a lot of the hysterics that play into hospital births. I can say, however, that during my most recent birth, I very much enjoyed having a midwife present. Having someone else there to be a lookout for complications allowed me the freedom to focus solely on laboring, which is usually the most you can do anyway during natural childbirth. Having a midwife there immediately following the birth gave me the peace to simply focus on my new baby instead of having to worry about things going on around me. The key is in finding a care provider that you’re comfortable with. I’m all about choices in childbirth, so the choice is yours really. I personally would imagine free birthing to be relatively safe based on the simple fact that 90-95% of all births are free of any complications whatsoever. If free birthing is something you’ re interested in, at least do your research to see if it would be a good fit for you. |
